Transformers: Age of Extinction, which will hit store shelves September 30th, will be one of the first blu-ray’s to include Dolby’s new Atmos format.

Atmos, is being billed by Dolby as “all-around-sound”. Dolby’s new format can support up to 64 speakers in a professional movie theater environment. This configuration allows for audio engineers to have sound imminate from specific locations in the listening environment. As a result, movie soundtracks have a 3 dimensional effect. Atmos equipped theaters usually have additional speakers on the sides and ceilings, however most of us don’t have the room or the money to invest in ceiling speakers.

To solve this dilemma some manufacturers such as Pioneer and Atlantic Technology are launching Atmos equipped speakers and modules. These work by reflecting sound off the ceiling and down into your listening area. Many of the major AV manufacturers have already pledged their support for the fledgling format. Transformers: Age of Extinction is the first of many blu-rays from Paramount and Warners Bros. that will support Atmos this fall and it most certainly won’t be the last.
