It’s not unusual for the average living room to be accosted by multiple remote controls. For the past several years, Logitech has had a death grip on the universal remote control industry despite emerging competition from smart devices. However, the folks at Ray Ventures are hoping to wrestle away a chunk of the universal remote control business from Logitech with the introduction of their new Super Remote.

Ray Super RemoteIt’s not a coincidence that the remote resembles a smart phone. In fact, at first glance it could easily be mistaken for one. The tall and slender frame of the Super Remote measures a meager 2.5″ wide by 5.5″ tall. Take a peek under the hood and you’ll find the brains of the operation is a 1.0GHz Dual Core CPU along with 1Gb DDR3-SDRAM and 8Gb flash memory.

The Ray Remote has a capacitive touch screen and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. On the right side of the remote are sleep/wake, mute and volume buttons. For connectivity, the Super remote includes built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and ZigBee (which allows you to control thermostats and lights). It’s three integrated IR antennas means that there’s no place your devices can hide.

Ray Super RemoteEach Super Remote ships with the same configuration. However, as the Ray Remote learns your likes and dislikes, it customizes itself to your tastes. It also has a built-in voting system so you can vote-up or vote-down a show. As a universal remote, it’s capable of controlling thousands of your living room devices from TVs and set-top boxes to games systems and streaming devices.

All of these bells and whistles don’t come cheap. The Ray Remote will have a starting retail price of $200 and is slated for release early Spring of 2015. Based on its feature set, the Ray remote sounds promising. However, the hard part will be for it to separate itself from the smart phones and tablets which offer many similar features. If it manages to distinguish itself it has the opportunity to give Logitech a run for their money. The Ray Remote is available for Pre-Order now.
