AV receivers have a well deserved reputation for being big, bulky and unattractive. Marantz is one of the few AV makers that has tried to break this trend by making receivers that have both elegance and style. In recent years, they’ve managed to encapsulate a potent amount of features into a small, but carefully considered form factor. The end result has been receivers that not only have sex appeal, but which are small and sleek. The Marantz NR1605 is their latest receiver who’s slender frame conceals a feature rich beast.

The Marantz NR1605 has more connectivity options than you’d expect. While it may not have an over abundance of analog connections, it does pack a surprising amount of HDMI inputs with 8. Two of the inputs (the Blu-Ray and Game inputs) are 4K-Ultra HD compatible. For custom installations, the NR1605 also includes an IR Input, IP Control and 12 Volt Trigger.

As you’d expect, the NR1605 is capable of decoding the major HD audio formats including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio as well as Dolby Pro Logic IIz, . Although it’s rated at only 50 – 70 watts per channel, each of it’s 7 channels have a power amp block with identical circuitry for all channels to ensure consistent and high sound quality. Surprisingly, the Marantz NR1605 also includes Multi-Room features that allow you to listen to 5 channel audio in one room and stereo audio in another.

 

Wireless connectivity is the latest technology trend and the 1605 joyously embraces it wholeheartedly. The diminutive little box offers support for both WiFi and Bluetooth. Apple lovers can also rejoice since it also includes AirPlay support. The NR1605 also allows you to enjoy content from a variety of internet streaming services such as Pandora, SiriusXM and Spotify.

 

Overall, for such a small package, Marantz has managed to include of plethora of features. We hope to get our hands on a review model within the upcoming months. The Marantz NR1605 is on shelves now at the suggested MSRP of $699.
