2015 will probably be the first year where fledgling technologies such as 4K-Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos start to make their mark on the world. In February of 2015, Marantz is aiming to launch their latest A/V Preamplifier, the AV8802. The 11.2 channel Marantz AV8802 embraces all of these emerging technological advances and combines them with Marantz’s traditional audio/video know-how.

As you’d expect with Marantz’s high-end units, the AV8802 has a stout build quality. It’s three piece, copper plated chassis is about as inert as you can get. On the sound side of things, the 8802 supports both of the new emerging 3D sound formats: Dolby Atmos and Auro-3D. (Auro-3D requires a paid upgrade).

The 8802 also features Marantz HDAM technology (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module) which provides low noise wideband performance. In addition, the Marantz AV8802 includes 32bit/192kHz DA-Converters and (4) digital sound processing engines. The 11 channel 8802 also supports Audyssey DSX and DTS Neo:X 11.1.

The AV8802 includes 8 HDMI inputs and 3 outputs. The 8802 is capable of running 2 displays in the main room and 1 in a second room. With 4K video on the cusp of becoming mainstream, the 8802 supports both 4K passthrough and upscaling. It’s ability to upscale video to 4K isn’t limited to just digital sources. It can also upscale analog video sources to 4K. Interestingly, the Marantz AV8802 supports the latest HDMI standard, however full HDCP 2.2 compliance will require a future hardware upgrade. According to Marantz, the reason for this is that HDCP 2.2 protection in its current state possesses bandwidth and color capability limitations which Marantz didn’t want to impose on their customers.

For networking, the Marantz AV8802 includes both built-in Bluetooth and WiFi. It’s also DLNA compliant meaning you can stream media from any other DLNA compliant device on your network such as your PC or external hard drive. For music streaming, the AV8802 gives you access to Spotify Connect®, Pandora®, SiriusXM™, as well as AirPlay®.  In addition, the 8802 supports a variety of audio formats including; MP3, WMA, FLAC HD, ALAC, WAV192/24 & AAC. Gapless, DSD, and AIFF.

The Marantz AV8802 is expected to be released February of 2015 with a suggested MSRP of $3,999.
