If you thought that Amazon was content with just dominating online retail, you’d be wrong. In a press release today, Amazon announced they’re intent to expand to the silver screen. Amazon Studios, which has garnered high praise and critical accolades for it’s original series Transparent, has stated that it intends to acquire and produce 12 features films for movie theaters. Production is slated to begin in 2015.

Amazon’s original movies will have Ted Hope at the helm of creative development. Hope was the co-founder of the production company, Good Machine, which produced Academy Award-nominated films such as Eat Drink Man Woman and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Amazon Prime members will be able to view recently released Amazon produced movies in as little as 1-2 months after their theatrical release. Usually it takes 39 to 52 weeks for theatrical movies to appear on video subscription services.

According to Roy Price, Vice President, Amazon Studios. “Not only will we bring Prime Instant Video customers exciting, unique, and exclusive films soon after a movie’s theatrical run, but we hope this program will also benefit filmmakers, who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience.”

The move my Amazon isn’t totally unexpected since their main competitor, Netflix, has already announced that it would also begin producing theatrical movies and is working with Yuen Wo-ping on a sequel to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
