The XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 3D printer is one of the most affordable and accessible 3D printers on the market. In fact, it won the CES 2014 Editors’ Choice Award for being the most affordable.

So what makes the XYZ Da Vinci 1.0 3D printer so approachable?  For starters, the Da Vinci 1.0 has an amazingly low price for a 3D printer.

The Da Vinci can build 3D models with a maximum build size of 7.8” x 7.8” x 7.8”. Unlike other printers on the market, the 1.0 is pretty much turn-key  as soon as it arrives at your doorstep. Simply plug it in, install the XYZ software and you should be making your first 3D print in about a ½ hour.

Appearance & Design

XYZ Da Vinci 1.0 3D Printer

The printer weighs about 56 lbs and is basically a 2’ cube. The translucent plastic with white highlights are reminicent of the old Apple iMAC’s when they first came out. The nice thing about the design is it’s inviting and not intimidating. As soon as you unbox it you want to jump in and start using it right away.

Performance

The plastic ABS filaments, which fuel the XYZ Da Vinci, are available in about 13 different colors. Loading new filament into the machine takes a matter of seconds. Simply load a new filament cartridge into the machine, run it through the filament guide tube and into the extruder hole and you’re basically done. The plastic filament used by the 1.0 is proprietary design so you can’t use 3rd party filament with the unit.

The Da Vinci can reach temperatures over 200 degrees however, its closed system means you’re not exposed to high temperatures or the filament as it’s running through the machine. The Da Vinci 1.0 can handle .stl and .3w formats. The XYZ online community has created thousands of 3D models which are available for download from their web site. If you’re the industrious type you can also create your own 3D models and share them with your fellow 3D modelers.

For maintenance, The XYZ Da Vinci 1.0 is designed to receive automatic software updates, includes an automatic nozzle cleaning feature and a printbed detection system with automatic leveling.

Buyers have praised its ease of setup and use. Because of this it’s an ideal printer for a beginner. The Da Vinci 1.0 has also received high marks for reliability as most have been able to run the machine for hours without any serious issues to speak of. Customer support for the most part is good although a few have complained about slow response times. Being that the XYZ Da Vinci 1.0 3D Printer ships already assembled,  it’s not uncommon for some of the parts to become misaligned during shipping. The plastic filaments that the Da Vinci uses are proprietary so you can’t use 3rd party materials.
