Later this summer Onkyo is launching their new Z-series of receivers sporting a sleek new design which, in this reviewers opinion, takes some design cues from Pioneer. Whether or not Onkyo’s recent partnership with Pioneer is influencing their design choices is up for debate, however the new Z-series definitely sports a modern minimalist look which is a departure for Onkyo. The first two receivers in the Z-series will be the Onkyo TX-RZ800 and the TX-RZ900.

On paper, these two receivers look like real beasts. The Onkyo TX-RZ900 features a hand-wound, high-current Toroidal transformer and the RZ800 features a EI transformer enabling both to produce chest pounding bass down to 5 Hz. The RZ900 pumps about 200 watts per channel and the RZ800 about 185 watts.

Both receivers are THX Select Plus 2 certified and feature the normal array of networking features which include DLNA compatibility, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay support. They also support a variety of internet streaming stations including Spotify, Pandora, SiriusXM Internet Radio, Slacker and TuneIn. The premium AK4458 digital-to-analog converter from Asahi Kasei allows each receiver to decode a variety of compressed and lossless audio formats such as MP3, WMA, WMA Lossless, FLAC, WAV, OggVorbis, AAC, Apple Lossless, DSD 5.6 MHz, LPCM, and Dolby TrueHD.

4K is the “it” feature this year and both Onkyo’s are prepared. Of their 8 HDMI inputs, 5 of them are HDCP 2.2 compliant and support 4K/60 Hz and 4:4:4 color-space. Multi-zone capability is front and center on both receivers since they each support sending audio and/or video to 3 separate areas in your home.

The other “it” features are Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object-oriented sound formats. Both Onkyo’s support Atmos right out of the box. DTS:X will be available with a firmware update later this year.
