Most speakers separates require an AV receiver or amplifier to provide power. However, Klipsch has introduced several models in their Reference line that don’t need an external power source thanks to their built-in amp. Evidently, these models must have been popular because Klipsch has just launched two new models – the Reference R-28PF floorstander and the R-14PM bookshelf model.

Klipsch R-28PF and R-14PM Speakers Preview

As mentioned, the main selling point with these speakers is that you don’t need an external amplifier. The R-28PF floorstanding speaker has a built-in 260 watt amplifier with dual copper-spun 8-inch woofers and a 1-inch horn-loaded tweeter. The R-14PM uses a 80 watt amplifier with a 4-inch copper-spun woofer and a .75-inch horn-loaded tweeter. Both speakers also include a 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter and an infrared remote to power-up the speakers, switch inputs and play/pause audio tracks.

Without an external amp, you have to have some way to connect the speakers to your equipment. Don’t fret, because both speakers have a handful of methods you can use to hook-up your audio/video equipment. Both the R-28PF and the R-14PM have built-in Bluetooth with aptX that enables you to wirelessly stream audio directly to the speakers. They also include phono, 3.5mm, RCA, USB and optical digital inputs. If you need more bass in your life (and who doesn’t), they also include a subwoofer output.

Both speakers are available now. The R-28PF speakers carry an MSRP of $1,199/pair and the R-14PM will run about $399/pair. More information can be found on Klipsch’s website.
