Sound bases have never enjoyed the same popularity as their sound bar cousins, however sound bases have one distinct advantage. Because their cabinets are typically larger they’re capable of producing greater amounts of bass than their slender relatives. As a result, sound bases have managed to stick around. Fluance, who’s made waves the past decade or so with their budget friendly good sounding speakers, has announced the launch of their new sound base, the AB40.

Fluance AB40 Soundstand Preview

The Fluance AB40’s body is constructed of acoustically tuned, MDF board and is capable of supporting TVs weighing as much as 150lbs. The AB40 is relatively small at 3.9 x 26 x 14 inches. Under the hood, the AB40 has (4) 3-inch aluminum midrange/woofer drivers and a dual 1-inch silk soft dome tweeters. According to Fluance, the sound base has a frequency response of 30Hz – 20KHz which means it should be able to produce impressive amounts of bass. The AB40’s woofers are angled in order to provide a wide sound stage. Powering the whole shebang are two 60 watt amplifiers.

For wireless streaming, the AB40 also includes bluetooth with AptX so it’s possible to stream music from a variety of sources including Spotify, Pandora and iTunes.
