Yamaha RX-V581

Yamaha 581 Review

The Yamaha RX-V581 carries on Yamaha’s tradition of cranking out top tier receivers. From WiFi to Bluetooth, the 581 has it. The amp also inclues Yamaha’s MusicCast multi-room audio system which allows you transmit audio from any device connected to the receiver to other audio components throughout your home. If that doesn’t get you excited, maybe this will. The Yamaha RX-V581 decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X and and can handle the latest and greatest features of 4K video such as HDCP 2.2, HDR and BT.2020. Pioneer VSX-1131

Pioneer VSX-1131 Preview

The Pioneer VSX-1131 is one of our favorite 7-channel amps this year. The amp has nearly every feature you’d expect in a mid-range receiver. Bluetooth and WiFi are both included. The 1131 also has its own multi-room audio system called FireConnect which shows promise, but has yet to be fully enabled or utilized on Pioneer’s amps. HDCP 2.2, HDR and BT.2020 are all included on the amp, which makes it a good match for 4K TVs. On the audio front, the Pioneer 1131 also decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Along with all of these features, the 1131 has great sound quality and one of the best user interfaces we’ve seen on a home theater receiver.

Sony STR-DN1070

Sony STR-DN1070 Review

Sony made a risky play this year by not embracing the two new hot audio formats Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. With the Sony STR-DN1070, they didn’t give in to peer pressure and instead focused on churning out one of the best sounding amps they could. By our estimation they succeeded. Despite not decoding Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the 1070 does have 4K support as well as built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and SongPal which allows for multi-room audio transmission.

Onkyo TX-NR757

Onkyo 757 Review

The Onkyo TX-NR757 is the top receiver in Onkyo’s NR line. As usual with Onkyo amps you won’t find a more feature rich AV receiver. Its ample list of features include full 4K video compatibility, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and hi-res audio support. We had a few problems with our initial calibration of the 757, but once we broke thru, the amp pulled off one of the best sonic performances we’ve heard this year.
